HUMAN FIGURE

The drawings below illustrate how  tone and line are used to create form and space.

Mark making; the use of line, gesture, pattern, texture along with tone  (and colour) can create mood, tension, dynamism, balance, harmony in a drawing and as the artist Seurat describes create particular emotional effects: ‘Gaiety is obtained through the use of dominant luminosity in tone; of prevailing warmth in colour.’  

The looseness of Bonnard's line drawing Two Friends (4th image down, left) is lively and energetic in appearance, as is Cezanne's quick bold sketch (7th image down, right) and differs in comparison to Seurat's subdued, carefully shaded  and softly rendered figures (top left and right).
